The MTCS ROV High Voltage Course is suitable for any person required to maintain or repair a work class ROV, Plough or Trencher that operate on voltages in excess of 1KV AC/1.5KV DC.
A high voltage course is not generally required for small inspection ROVs because they do not tend to operate on high voltage electricity. They may, however, operate on voltages that are still considered to be dangerous and we consider completing this course to be an advantage to any operator.
The MTCS ROV High Voltage Course is also suitable for persons who are required to supervise an electrical isolation (Person in Charge/Isolating Authority). The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (regulation 16) makes specific reference to personnel involved in Electrical Maintenance Work requiring some form of Supervision.
The MTCS ROV High Voltage Course does include an assessment process for personnel who are eligible to certify as ‘Competent in High Voltage Systems’.
In order for someone to be eligible for an assessment for Person in Charge/Isolating Authority they must:
- Have been certified as competent at Senior Pilot Technician (as a minimum) via the MTCS Grade Assessment process or equivalent. The Senior Pilot Technician competencies include Unit 7 – ‘Demonstrate the ability to isolate High Voltage systems prior to carrying out maintenance activities’.
OR
- Be employed at Senior Pilot Technician Grade (or equivalent) as a minimum and successfully complete the Grade Assessment for Unit 7 within the High Voltage Course.
The course is also suitable for shore-based personnel who may work on ROV systems in a workshop environment.

Many individuals working in other sectors of the offshore industry are also required to maintain equipment that is powered by High Voltage Electricity.
MTCS also offer a High Voltage Course that can be applied to persons maintaining, working on or in close proximity to any equipment that is powered by High Voltage Electricity.
