No training course can automatically make someone competent, and competence can only be achieved by successfully demonstrating a specific task over a period of time in different scenarios.
For example, the competence assessment within the MTCS High Voltage course requires someone (who are themselves deemed competent in High Voltage activities) to supervise the electrical isolation and ensure it is carried out safely and in accordance with procedures.
In addition to observing and questioning the candidate, the evidence required to assess their competence would include documentation relating to a range of electrical isolations carried out on different systems, scenarios and possibly vessels.
The course is suitable for all ROV personnel and includes assessment of knowledge and skills (practical assessment).
The practical assessment consists of an electrical isolation that is carried out by the candidate whilst under supervision of a competent high voltage isolating authority (e.g. ROV Supervisor/Superintendent).
Candidates who successfully complete the knowledge and practical assessment will be awarded a Certificate that states ‘Successful Completion of Knowledge and Practical’.
To be eligible for assessment of competence in ROV High Voltage, you must satisfy the following requirements:
- Successfully complete the knowledge and practical assessment elements of the MTCS ROV High Voltage Course
- Hold a valid Certificate of Competence at Senior Pilot Technician (or equivalent) or above, that was awarded by workplace assessment in accordance with IMCA C005
- Have evidence of conducting High Voltage Isolations in the Workplace
