What roles in the marine sector need an MTCS competence certificate?
Marine and small workboat crew, deckhands, and supervisors can all benefit from MTCS competence certification. This applies to anyone whose role involves safety-critical decisions or tasks on board, and who needs to demonstrate that competence to an employer, client, or tender process.
How certification works
MTCS offers two main certification routes for marine personnel, in line with the wider MTCS Competence Programme:
- ICA (Individual Competence Assessment): a structured route to demonstrate competence against defined standards.
- GA (Grade Assessment): an alternative route depending on role and experience.
Both routes lead to a Certificate of Competence, typically valid for three years, with renewal paths available through MTCS Online.
Why certification matters in the marine sector
Proof of competence is increasingly expected by employers and clients across the marine industry, not just in oil and gas. A recognised certificate gives crew confidence in their own ability, and gives employers independently verified evidence of a safe, capable team.
